Immigration rules in the United States are set by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Up to 675,000 immigrant visas can be issued each year in various visa categories.

Immigrant visas provide individuals with permanent residence and work authorization (Green Card). However, there are no annual visa restrictions for spouses, parents and children under 21 of US citizens.

Humanitarian legal status, such as asylum and temporary protected status, also has no number limit.

Once a person receives an immigrant visa or is granted asylum, they are eligible to apply for lawful permanent residence in the US (Green Card). Green Card holders can apply for citizenship after 5 years (in some cases 3 years) of residence in the US. Even if they do not apply for citizenship, they continue to have the right to live and work indefinitely. However, they are subject to immigration laws as long as they reside in the US.

Each year, the US also grants temporary visas (non-immigrant visas) to tourists, students and temporary workers, allowing them to stay in the country for certain periods of time. Non-immigrant visas cover temporary stays for work, study or visit. While some work-based visas are limited by quotas, categories such as tourist and student visas do not have an annual number limit.
